7 Baseball Haiku at Camden Yards

fig. 1: Birdland on June 17, 2016

Baseball and haiku go together like reading incentive programs and free Personal Pan Pizza. (Fellow 90s kids, you know what Iā€™m talking about.) I moved away from Maryland after high school, so when I got the chance to attend a Baltimore Orioles game in 2016, I wrote this haiku sequence to commemorate the visit.

wild foul ball
the third-base coach
casually ducks

home run ball:
caught!
the sound of
disappointed fans

swinging strike!
the batter
adjusts his gloves

pop fly to the press box
pieces of a laptop

home team trails
by 11 runs
the crowd
thins
out

postgame fireworks
the stands twinkle
with phone flashes

after the game
the black bat flutters
over the dark infield
